What the FAQ?! - Turmeric

What the FAQ?! is a weekly series of answers to things we get asked very often. In other words, frequently asked questions.

Q: What is turmeric? How do you say that? What is it good for? What does it taste like??

A: Let's go one by one here...first, turmeric a root. Pronounced "too-mur-ick," the root has been used for centuries as a dye and is highly regarded for its medicinal properties. It is used frequently in middle eastern cooking and has a flavor that is quite similar to saffron. In fact, it is used as a saffron substitute in many cooking recipes.

The benefits or turmeric are seemingly endless. From its gorgeous color (color is a benefit, too!) to its multiple medicinal uses, turmeric is a super root. For starters, turmeric is nature's ibuprofen. That is to say that it is a natural anti-inflammatory. It is fantastic for swollen joints, arthritic pain and can even provide relief from heartburn. Studies are now being conducted to examine the cancer fighting benefits of the curcumin in turmeric.

As far as looks go, turmeric is very similar to ginger. It is the bright orange-yellow color that distinguishes the root and gives our turmeric drinks an awesome glow.
